La Loire à Vélo: Day 1: Saint-Brevin-les-Pins to Saint-Florent-le-Vieil

Today's route plan:

Everything packed the day before and ready to roll, and in the TGV taking me to Saint-Nazaire.

Internet advises that the bridge joining Saint-Nazaire on the north side of La Loire with Saint-Brevin-les-Pins on the south side is not very well adapted to bikes (high traffic, no dedicated cycle path, and frequent strong side winds), so it might be less stressful to use the dedicated free bike shuttle bus to cross it to the other side.

One of the many bridge crossings over Loire tributaries.

A melting boat?

In Nantes one of the must-visit places are the famous Machines of the Isle of Nantes.

From the Atlas Obscura:

Perhaps the most famous of the creations of the Machines de l’Ile is the Gigantic Sultan’s Elephant. The massive elephant is a 12-metre high by 8-metre wide, elephant automaton-sculpture which can take “up to 49 passengers for a 45-minute walk.” In the words of one viewer “When the majestic animal goes out for its walk, it is like architecture in motion departing a steel cathedral. Each time the pachyderm goes out, it is a unique spectacle for everyone to enjoy.”

First night at Camping de l'Île Batailleuse in Varades St-Florent le Vieil.
